Against the wishes of his parents, Wilhelm volunteered for militaryservice at the age of 17. He trained as a paratrooper and was shot downon the eastern front. While descending, he was hit by shrapnel from a shell that exploded beside him. He was
captured and placed in a Sovietprison camp. He did not receive any medical attention but fellowprisoners-of-war removed the larger pieces of shrapnel. This injury wasto give him pain and health problems throughout his life. |
